1) Be independent
If you think your family will throw you out because you are an atheist there is no point in making such a possibility a reality. If you are under 18 just tough it out until you come of age and are able to come out as a non-believer. If you are over 18 I suggest a part time job that pays rent and food while you go through college.

2) Be mentally and emotionally prepared.
You will lose friends. Some people will not want to have anything to do with you. Don’t feel too bad. If they shun you then they were not worth your friendship. If a shared myth was the only thing that brought you together then forget it. There are real things and true experiences that can be shared with other people that will actually value them.

3) Be knowledgeable.
People around you will ask you why are you a non-believer. Being able to stand your ground logically, historically and scientifically will not only command respect but may well serve as an example for some that will hear you to follow.

4) Be proud. There is nothing wrong and everything right with being who you are, with promoting reality, science, truth and reason. The more us that come out the bigger our influence will be in society at large. Also meeting other non-believers will be easier.
