ask something
i know you've posted a few things in the past about the religion of the founding fathers. i used the three quotes from 'religulous' (adams, jefferson, and franklin) as part of a post on facebook and was immediately trounced upon by someone saying my quotes were out of context and all the founding fathers were A+ Christians.
while i am willing to graciously admit i used out-of-context quotes (i didn't know and didn't question the statements), i can't help but think that there was still something not right about the founding fathers being hunky-dory Christians.
any insights?
thanks!
Fact: The most influential Founding Fathers were more deist than theists to the point that Thomas Jefferson actually made his own bible free of supernatural references!!!
This is the bottom line:
“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”
-Treaty of Tripoli 1796
This treaty represents the feeling of the founding fathers that penned it. If some founding fathers where “hunky-dory christians” (which most actually weren’t ) or not is irrelevant. Our nation is not a Christian nation but a Secular Republic. That is just fact.
In regards to quotes and context it is up to you to conduct the research. Why not read the works of Paine or Jefferson yourself? I can assure you it will be time well spent.
Take care.
